Vision: “Water resources, rights and interests are highly valued and actively managed to support water-dependent communities and ecosystems”

Goal 1: All water allocation plans and distribution systems in the region account for the impacts of climate change by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Monitor groundwater systems to improve knowledge of water availability and water quality trends
  • Develop and implement appropriately resourced, science-based water allocation plans with community consultation
  • Ensure allocation plans account for the impacts of climate change
  • Investigate and implement sustainable alternate sources of water
  • Present data in a format that is easily accessible and understood by the general public
  • Develop stormwater management plans
  • Implement Water Sensitive Urban Design principles
  • Support Traditional Owners and Custodians with the sustainable management of their water rights and interests
Goal 2: All water resources are distributed equitably and sustainably between social, environmental and economic requirements by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Monitor groundwater systems to improve knowledge of water availability and water quality trends
  • Develop and implement appropriately resourced, science-based water allocation plans with community consultation
  • Ensure allocation plans account for the cultural value of water and water resources for Traditional Owners and Custodians in the region
  • Investigate and implement sustainable alternate sources of water
  • Present data in a format that is easily accessible and understood by the general public
  • Develop storm water management plans
  • Implement Water Sensitive Urban Design principles
  • Support Traditional Owners and Custodians with the sustainable management of their water rights and interests
Goal 3: 25 projects implemented to monitor, maintain or enhance water quality in the region by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Protect public drinking water source areas (PDWSA)
  • Work with Traditional Owners and Custodians to identify and manage water resources of cultural significance
  • Work with Traditional Owners and Custodians to monitor and enhance water quality
  • Manage stormwater and drainage to limit the impacts of floods
  • Manage the impacts of water erosion
  • Monitor and maintain or improve water quality
  • Educate the community about threats to water quality and available management options
  • Avoid or repair contamination in the region’s waterscapes
  • Increase community awareness of the relationship between land use, good environmental practice and water resource quality maintenance
Goal 4: 25 projects implemented to monitor, maintain or enhance ecosystem health and function in water-dependent ecosystems in the region by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Determine ecological water requirements for water-dependent ecosystems
  • Manage recreational activities and access in estuaries and rivers
  • Map and monitor the extent, condition and natural variability of the region’s waterscapes
  • Work with Traditional Owners and Custodians to identify and manage water resources of cultural significance
  • Work with Traditional Owners and Custodians to monitor and maintain healthy water-dependent ecosystems
  • Identify priority wetlands and watercourses for protection and restoration
  • Identify priority groundwater dependent ecosystems for protection and restoration
  • Develop and implement management plans for the restoration and conservation of priority wetlands and watercourses
  • Increase the current extent and improve the condition of riparian vegetation
  • Coordinate integrated feral animal and / or weed management in riparian areas
  • Restore or rehabilitate native vegetation in riparian areas
  • Establish vegetation buffers around riparian areas
Goal 5: Support at least three Traditional Custodians and their representative groups to secure and sustainably manage water rights and interests by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Develop and implement appropriately resourced, science-based water allocation plans with community consultation
  • Ensure allocation plans account for the impacts of climate change
  • Ensure allocation plans account for the cultural value of water and water resources in the landscape
  • Investigate and implement sustainable alternate sources of water
  • Present data in a format that is easily accessible and understood by the general public
  • Support Traditional Owners and Custodians with the sustainable management of their water rights and interests
