Community Capacity – Goals

Vision: “The local community has the knowledge, ability and willingness to contribute effectively to natural resource management”

Goal 1: 200 community events delivered to build natural resource management knowledge, ability and willingness in the local community by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Conduct a learning exchange visit, training event, farm walk, workshop or conference
  • Host a beach or river clean-up day
  • Engage with schools and tertiary education institutions on natural resource management
  • Engage with Traditional Custodians and their representative organisations on natural resource management
  • Develop and implement education resources
  • Develop and implement a communication and engagement strategy
  • Implement a scholarship program
Goal 2: 10 citizen science project partnerships contribute monitoring data to recognised local, state or federal datasets at least once per year by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Develop citizen science partnerships
  • Develop volunteer-based monitoring programs
  • Encourage landowners to collect and report data from their properties
  • Provide training for citizen scientists
  • Support the activities of citizen scientists, including in the region’s Aboriginal community
  • Promote opportunities for community-based monitoring and science projects in schools and tertiary education institutions
Goal 3: Environmental education projects engage school children and the public in at least 30 towns across the region by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Visit schools to present information on local biodiversity
  • Visit schools to present information on sustainability in the region
  • Deliver events that focus on raising awareness of threats to biodiversity
  • Deliver events that focus on raising awareness of threats to sustainability in the region
  • Create environmental education materials for use by schools and community groups
  • Ensure that Traditional Ecological Knowledge is well represented in environmental education materials
  • Support Return to Country events led by the region’s Aboriginal community
Goal 4: At least 20 community-based natural resource management groups remain viable through ongoing recruitment of volunteers or members by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Support volunteer recruitment activities
  • Support regional volunteer forums or networking events
  • Support community environmental groups to access funds for their activities
  • Deliver events where community environmental groups interact with school children or students
  • Deliver expos or events celebrating the work that volunteers do in the region
  • Create media releases or social media posts celebrating the work of volunteer groups
  • Maintain an NRM contacts database for the NAR
Goal 5: 25 projects implemented to incorporate ecologically sustainable development into built environments around the region by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Use best-practice water management techniques that increase water use efficiency
  • Promote the use of renewable energy technologies
  • Promote native gardens
  • Work with Aboriginal artists and designers to celebrate local cultural heritage in the built environment
  • Achieve a 75% municipal waste recovery rate (waste to landfill)
  • Encourage walking, cycling and the use of public transport
  • Develop partnerships focused on sustainable urban design
  • Include signage to communicate local stories of Country, culture and community
  • Incorporate spaces that celebrate the region’s Aboriginal culture and heritage
  • Conduct education and training activities or events about sustainable behaviour changes
