Invasive Species – Goals

Vision: “Invasive species, including plants, animals and diseases, are effectively managed both at a local and regional scale taking a nil tenure approach”

Goal 1: 20 research projects implemented to determine the level of risk and/or impacts associated with invasive and potentially invasive species in the region by 2030.
  • Identify priority invasive species in the region
  • Establish baseline data on the density and distribution of weeds or pest animals
  • Quantify the impacts of priority invasive species in the region
  • Improve understanding of impact of invasive species on the traditional way of life of Aboriginal people in the region
  • Conduct research into the effectiveness of control measures
  • Conduct research into innovative alternative management options for weed or pest animal management
  • Co-design research projects with Aboriginal groups on managing invasive species using traditional land management techniques such as cultural fire, participatory mapping, place-based management and trapping and removal of feral animals
Goal 2: 50 stakeholder groups or individuals participate in coordinated surveillance of high priority* established invasive species, contributing monitoring data to recognised local, state or federal datasets at least once per year by 2030.
  • Conduct monitoring of weeds or pest animals
  • Work with Traditional Owners and Custodians, and Aboriginal Ranger Programs, to monitor the presence and impacts of invasive species
  • Coordinate weed or pest animal control on private properties in the region
  • Develop or contribute to platforms which enable landowners to collect and report data from their properties
  • Support a coordinated approach with government and community to control invasive species
  • Implement financial and other incentives to support invasive species management on private land.

Goal 3: 100 coordinated management actions (across multiple properties or involving multiple stakeholder groups) implemented to manage and reduce the impact of invasive and potentially invasive species in the region by 2030.
  • Prevent new potentially invasive species from entering the region
  • Eradicate invasive species in areas from which they can be excluded on an on-going basis
  • Contain invasive species by restricting their spread and stabilising their impact
  • Control established invasive species at specific sites to minimise their impact on native species or agricultural production
  • Control established invasive species at specific sites to reduce their geographical distribution
  • Coordinate landholder control and management of invasive species, including with Traditional Owners and Custodians
  • Maintain and implement aquatic biosecurity programs
  • Communicate management options for priority invasive species
  • Support land managers to ensure biodiversity co-benefits when managing invasive species for agricultural purposes.
