Vision: “Coastal and marine biodiversity, landforms and ecosystem integrity are valued, maintained, improved and restored across the whole system”

Goal 1: Conservation status of all coastal and marine threatened and priority plants, animals and ecological communities is maintained or improved, and no extinctions occur, by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Conduct community awareness-raising and education programs
  • Identify or conserve priority coastal and marine areas
  • Control invasive weeds in coastal areas and on islands
  • Revegetate coastal areas and islands with native vegetation
  • Reduce or eliminate marine debris
  • Control the impacts of off-road vehicles
  • Control or eradicate invasive animals on islands
  • Improve condition, function and species diversity of estuaries and coastal wetlands
  • Manage marine fauna
  • Preserve the integrity of the Houtman Abrolhos and Turquoise Coast Islands Nature Reserves
Goal 2: All commercial and recreational fisheries in the region practice sustainable fishing, with commercial enterprises achieving and maintaining Marine Stewardship Council certification by 2030.
Indicative Actions

  • Undertake research to address knowledge gaps in coastal, marine and estuarine ecosystem function
  • Undertake long-term monitoring of fish stocks or coastal, marine and estuarine ecosystems
  • Support the creation, maintenance and strategic management of marine reserves and fish habitat protection areas
  • Maintain and implement aquatic biosecurity programs
  • Promote sustainable tourism and recreation in coastal and marine areas
  • Achieve or maintain Marine Stewardship Council certification
  • Adaptively manage fish resources for long-term ecological sustainability
Goal 3: 25 research or monitoring projects implemented to increase scientific knowledge and community awareness of coastal and marine biodiversity conservation in the region by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Improve scientific knowledge of native species, particularly priority and data deficient threatened species
  • Improve community awareness of native species, particularly priority and data deficient threatened species, through environmental education
  • Monitor change in the distribution or condition of native species
  • Develop priorities for conservation action
  • Identify impacts of risks (e.g. climate change, invasive species) on threatened species
  • Improve understanding of Aboriginal people’s connection to the coastal and marine environment and related Traditional Ecological Knowledge
Goal 4: Coastal Local Government Authorities have implemented all the recommendations identified in Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plans by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • No new construction within the 2100 coastal setback lines identified in Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plans.
  • Local Government Authorities include 2100 coastal setback lines in development plans and building codes
  • Implement or support the implementation of coastal development plans
  • Update development plans and zonation policies to include 100yr setback line
  • Communicate erosion and inundation risk to residents
  • Enforce development plans and zonation policies that include 100yr setback line

We respectfully acknowledge the Southern Yamatji and Noongar People who are the Traditional Owners and original natural resource managers of the Northern Agricultural Region, and pay our respect to the Aboriginal Elders in the region, past, present and emerging.
