Aboriginal Custodianship – Goals

Vision: “We embrace the importance of Aboriginal cultural, heritage and traditional knowledge systems in every aspect of natural resource management in the region, and respect all Traditional Owners and Custodians across the NAR”

Goal 1: All natural resource management projects in the region acknowledge and engage with Traditional Owners and Custodians, and their representative bodies or corporations, by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Map Native Title determinations
  • Build partnerships between NGOs, government departments and Aboriginal organisations
  • Develop engagement and communication plans, including Reconciliation Action Plans
  • Engage cultural interpretation services for events
  • Promote Aboriginal leaders and role models
  • Develop co-management and joint management agreements with Traditional Owners and Custodians
  • Co-design and co-deliver research and NRM projects with Traditional Owners and Custodians
  • Consult with Traditional Owners and Custodians long before beginning any activities on-ground
  • Implement Acknowledgement of Country protocols (signage, email signatures, website banners)
Goal 2: At least 5 addition­­al traditional knowledge projects, led by Traditional Owners and Custodians, designed and implemented by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Gather and distribute information on Aboriginal heritage and culture, where appropriate
  • Produce newsletter articles, publications or resources focusing on Traditional Ecological Knowledge
  • Promote inclusion of traditional knowledge systems and language into the school curriculum
  • Host or support Aboriginal Language events, Cultural Days, Return to Country events
  • Host or support Aboriginal arts and tool-making, oral history or story-telling events
  • Host, support or participate in Traditional Ecological Knowledge conferences or workshops
  • Update existing documents to include Traditional Ecological Knowledge
  • Protect the intellectual property of Traditional Owners and Custodians and knowledge holders
Goal 3: 100 activities undertaken to manage and protect Aboriginal cultural and heritage sites in consultation with Traditional Owners and Custodians by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Identify and register significant sites on the Aboriginal Heritage Inquiry System
  • Prioritise regionally significant sites
  • Develop or support the development of site management plans or Healthy Country plans
  • Share information on how to record and register heritage sites
  • Map significant sites or species
  • Protect, restore, monitor or maintain heritage sites
  • Establish a custodian program to care for heritage sites
Goal 4: 10 Aboriginal-owned organisations and businesses supported to engage in natural resource management in the region by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Procure services of Aboriginal-owned businesses
  • Identify needs of Aboriginal organisations wanting to engage in NRM
  • Build relationships between NGOs, government departments and Aboriginal Prescribed Bodies Corporate
  • Engage and empower Aboriginal organisations
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer and capacity building, including cultural mentorship
  • Develop or support the development of Healthy Country plans
  • Train Aboriginal people in leadership and management
  • Increase cultural and personal safety in the workplace
Goal 5: 100 Aboriginal People employed in natural resource management in the region by 2030.
Indicative Actions
  • Establish, expand or support Aboriginal Ranger programs, including for women and youth
  • Establish or support the development of Aboriginal enterprises in natural resource management or Traditional Ecological Knowledge
  • Engage cultural interpretation services for events
  • Employ Aboriginal people
  • Promote Aboriginal artists
  • Procure services of Aboriginal contractors or consultants
  • Support new Aboriginal-owned businesses in the NRM sector
  • Provide traineeships, internships or scholarships for Aboriginal people
